Venezianisches Gondellied

I’d been working on Du bist die Ruh for a little longer than I’d have liked (it’s still as beautiful a song as ever, but when you work on one song for too long, you inevitably get bored), and I was eager to learn something new.

I’d already been looking into other works, but my singing teacher surprised me with a little know, but beautiful song by Mendelssohn.

I’ll be working on this song for the next couple of weeks.

Sebben, crudele

And back to the baroque period again. Caldara’s aria Sebben crudele from his – now seldom performed – opera La costanza in amor vince l’inganno was pure bliss to work on. It felt as if this aria was written for my voice.

I enjoyed every minute I spent perfecting my rendition of this aria.

Der Tod und das Mädchen

Although it’s probably every singer’s dream to sing Schubert’s Erlkönig, my voice isn’t nearly ready for that yet.

However, my singing teacher did think I was ready to sing “Der Tod und das Mädchen” which has quite a few things in common with Erlkönig. Same composer, same style, same theme and the singer has to portray more than one character, and has to do so skillfully and believably.

This was a challenge I couldn’t possibly pass up. It wasn’t easy, but it was great. I especially liked singing the role of der Tod. A bit of morbid fun has never been wasted on me.

Ombra mai fu

Next, I sang  Ombra mai fu from Händel’s opera Xerxes, which was rather nice to work on.

If by now you’re assuming I must really like Baroque music, you’re absolutely right. But there’s more to me than just Baroque.
